  • Remedy For a Yeast Infection
    By:Blake Allen

If you've ever had a yeast infection, you know how important it is to find a remedy... fast. These infections are uncomfortable and can even be painful. If you've got one, finding a remedy is a pretty high priority.

Yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, a bacterium that lives within every one of us naturally. When it is in lower numbers, it helps us fight off other germs and keeps us healthy. When we experience an imbalance in our body or have a weakened immune system Candida grows out of control, creating this infection.

Causes of yeast overgrowth can be from the food choices we make, being ill or under stress, or creating a good growing environment for yeast. While eating too many carbohydrates can add to the probability of developing an infection, it is because they break down into sugars in the body, not because they contain yeast. The yeast used in baked goods is a completely different species than Candida albicans.

You may have heard of acidophilus. Milk is sometimes treated with it so those who are mildly lactose-intolerant can digest it easier. Yogurt is also a common source for acidophilus. Plain yogurt that contains this ingredient can be useful when applied directly on the source of the infection. You can also eat yogurt that contains acidophilus or take acidophilus supplements as a remedy for a yeast infection. They are available in most health food stores.

Gentian violet is another remedy for a yeast infection. It's an antifungal agent that is usually applied as a weak solution topically. It can also be put on a tampon if it needs to be applied vaginally. Be sure you wear a pad if you use gentian violet, and wear old clothing or protect your bedding. It makes everything blue.

Apple cider vinegar can be applied to the infection. Vinegar is very effective when fighting yeast, but you will want to dilute it first. Straight vinegar will cause stinging. You can dilute the vinegar with water and apply it as either a douche, or you can add vinegar to your bath water and bathe in it. Be sure to use apple cider vinegar, not distilled vinegar.

It is said that buttermilk will build up your resistance to yeast infections by drinking a glass every day. Buttermilk contains lactic acid, which is the active ingredient that will affect the infection.

So, when looking for a remedy for a yeast infection, look in your own house first. You may find an effective, inexpensive remedy right in front of you.
